The Butternut or white walnut is a species of walnut native to the eastern United States and southeast Canada. This hardy deciduous tree has compound leaves with serrated leaflets, furrowed light gray bark and distinctive oval nuts with a deeply ridged shell. The edible nuts are sweet and creamy with a high oil content and a good source of fats (especially omega-3 fatty acids), protein and vitamins +minerals.
One of the most cold tolerant nut trees but listed as endangered.
